A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja Wednesday ordered the arrest of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, for refusing to appear in court.
The judge, Justice Stephen Pam on Wednesday gave the warrant of arrest following Mahmood’s absent in court for the third time and ordered police to effect the arrest immediately.
The INEC Chairman had on July 10, ignored an order summoning him to appear before the court.
The judge gave the order for Mahmood to appear before the court while ruling on a preliminary objection by INEC and its Chairman in a contempt proceeding filed by Ejike Oguebego and Chuks Okoye, Chairman and Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra State respectively.
Justice Pam had ordered Yakubu to appear before him on July 5 so as to show the reason why he should not be sent to prison for contempt of court.
