MEMBERS of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) unit of the Joint Union Council are undergoing a two-week training in international best practice of handling labour-management relationship to achieve optimal performance being conducted by COINMAC International Nigeria, a management and human capital development consulting firm.
Themed ”Linking Labour Relation to Organization Development”, the training workshop taking place in COINMAC’s Conference Room of its Ibadan office, according to Mr. Ayo Salam, the managing director of the firm, is to assist the Joint Union Council unit of FIRS in further enhancing industrial harmony and peace through brainstorming and teaching based on global best practice.
He said COINMAC is passionate to expose to the union the ideals of International Best Practice in Labour-Management Relations with the assemblage of crop of proven and acknowledged practicing experts in the field of industrial relations.
Mr. Ayo Salam said that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) need to evolve strategies in dealing with their workforce especially labour unions in stemming expected frictions that caused by the current economic recession.
He said with the economic predicament that the nation find itself where governments at the local, state and federal levels is currently facing economic recession, managing government requires strategic approaches by government and private establishments and their workers especially, the unions.
Such approaches according to Salam includes; involving labour unions in human resource management matters and not limiting their involvement to industrial relations matters.
This, he said, will help to reduce areas of sharp disagreement between labour and management.
He also made mention of strategic communication network whereby labour leaders are properly briefed by government about new innovations and changes before being implemented, stressing that it will help convey government policies and intentions to the workforce through the union leaders.
Salam pointed out that a myriad of industrial challenges in both public and private organizations in the country are caused by inefficient and ineffective management and labour union adding that frequent industrial conflict has comparatively hampered productivity.
In his reaction, the Vice Chairman of the Union, Comrade Afolabi Gabriel said leveraging on the wealth of experience in management/ labour relations impacted by Coinmac International, workers of the Federal Inland Revenue Service have been enjoying cordial relation with the management adding that the management of FIRS has been supportive.
He said, “FIRS has been a very stable organization, giving room for staff career development and impressive welfare package that stimulate the workforce. This has helped the organization in achieving its core mandate”.
