An amazing 85-year-old grandmother, Barbara Thackray, who runs 10 miles twice a week to stay in shape, has been selected as one of the stars of a new Adidas advertisement, along with superstars like Liverpool footballer Mo Salah.
Barbara, a retired college lecturer, began running only eight years ago to support St. Ann’s Hospice in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
When asked if she’d seen the new ad, Barbara told the BBC: “Well, I’ve only seen it vaguely, yeah, on a little screen.”
And how does she feel about her newfound fame?
“Fine”, she humbly replied. She continued: “So long as they [Adidas] were prepared to make a significant donation to St. Ann’s Hospice, I felt okay about it.”
After supporting St. Ann’s Hospice for more than 10 years, including during her sister’s illness and ultimate passing, Ms. Thackray has raised more than £20,000 for the organization in a relatively short period of time.
Barbara has special feelings for the hospital because her sister passed away there in the 1990s.
Since then, she has donated to the charity in thanks for the excellent care her sister got.
Barbara was the sole participant in the 80+ age group when she finished the Run North West Trafford 10k race in March 2023.
She accomplished a personal best speed of 85 minutes in front of her 20 proud family members.
Additionally, St. Ann’s Hospice has praised her efforts.
Lucy Leeming, Community Fundraising Manager, said: “The awareness Barbara has raised across Greater Manchester for the importance and vitality of St Ann’s Hospice has undeniably helped raise funds and awareness for our charity.
“Her passion and dedication towards our charity shine through in everything she does for us; we’re so grateful to have her support.”
