On Monday evening, President Bola Tinubu named DIG Egbetokun Olukayode, a former chief security officer, as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
This occurred just three months after the Police Service Commission authorised Egbetokun’s appointment as the deputy inspector general of police for the country’s southwest geopolitical region.
DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, who retired from the service on March 15 of this year, was replaced by DIG Egbetokun.
In a statement, Willie Bassey, Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary-General to the Federation, announced his appointment as IG.
Here are six things to know about the recently appointed acting IGP.
1. Egbetokun served as Lagos State’s previous police commissioner.
2. He will take Usman Baba’s place.
3. In 1999, when President Tinubu was the governor of Lagos State, he was named Chief Security Officer.
4. He held positions such as Squadron Commander, Mopol 5, Officer-in-Charge, Anti-Fraud Unit, FCT Command, Officer-in-Charge, Administration, Lagos State Command Headquarters, Ikeja, Area Commander, Osogbo, Osun State Command, Area Commander, Gusau, and Zamfara State Command, among others.
5. Before joining the police force, Egbetokun received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Lagos in Akoka, Yaba, Lagos. He also briefly taught mathematics at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
6. He also has an MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo, a Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University, Abraka, and an MSc in Engineering Analysis from UNILAG.
