Swedish electric carmaker Polestar has announced it is working on a new car, called the 7, that will be produced in Europe.
That Polestar’s new car is called the 7 shouldn’t come as a surprise since the company began with the Polestar 1, then launched the Polestar 2, and most recently put the 3 and 4, pictured above, into production. It is now working on the 5, with the 6—a stunning convertible electric sports car to rival the Tesla Roadster—due in 2026. So, of course, the 7 would be next.
Interestingly, the Swedish EV startup has revealed that the 7 will be a “premium compact SUV” intended to target what Polestar describes as “the world’s fastest-growing and most profitable premium segment.”
Polestar also said the 7 will be produced in Europe, despite the company already having manufacturing facilities in the US, South Korea and China. Until now, Polestar’s cars have been developed on EV platforms shared with Volvo, but it now says that, from the 7 onwards, it will “gradually move from a multi-platform approach to one single architecture, reducing complexity, costs, and investments.”
Philipp Römers, head of design at Polestar, said the 7 will “be everything our customers expect from us, both in terms of design and performance.” The Polestar 7 is expected to be seen as a successor to the 2 rather than an evolution of Polestar’s best-selling car to date.
Before the 7 arrives, Polestar will bring the 5 and 6 to market. As shown in prototype form, the 5 is a four-door performance GT car that is expected to compete against the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. It will be the first Polestar to have an 800-volt electrical system, meaning a higher battery recharge rate than any Polestar. The company has said the 5 is expected to produce over 880 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, making it the most potent Polestar to date, and by some margin.
After that, the Polestar 6 is scheduled to go into production in 2026. This is a 2+2 convertible sports car similar to the Tesla Roadster. It is expected to perform similarly to the Polestar 5, and a version called the LA Concept edition has already sold out, with a standard version due to follow when production begins next year. After all that, we’ll see the yet-to-be-revealed Polestar 7.
