A retired Assistant Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Otunba Kunle Akinyele, suddenly slumped and died during his wife’s 60th birthday thanksgiving celebration in Lagos State.
The incident came to public attention after a video emerged late on Saturday, April 19, 2025, showing him singing praises at the event, then, suddenly slumped. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The unfortunate incident cast a pall over what was meant to be a joyous occasion for his wife, Catherine. Moments before the collapse, Otunba Akinyele had unveiled a brand-new Toyota Highlander he bought as a birthday gift for her.
REPORTERS AT LARGE gathered that guests, who had already settled into the reception venue and were being serenaded by a live band, left the venue in shock and disbelief following the tragic incident.
Otunba Akinyele described as a kind-hearted and generous man, well-loved by his kinsmen and community. In addition to his service in the Nigeria Customs Service, he was also a hotelier in Lagos.
His sudden passing has left his family, friends and community devastated.
