Mr. Olayiwola Awakan officially assumed office as the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) today, promising a “new dawn” for the nation’s tourism sector.

The ceremony, held at the NTDA Headquarters in Abuja, saw Awakan pledge a renewed focus on innovation, collaboration, and attracting investment to boost Nigeria’s tourism potential.

Upon his arrival, Mr. Awakan was warmly received by the NTDA Management Team, led by Mr. Ovie Esewhaye, the Director overseeing the Office of the Director-General, who presented the official handover note. Following a meeting with Directors and a tour of the offices, Awakan addressed the general staff at the NTDA Village Hall.

In his maiden address, the new DG expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment, stating, “I’m happy to be here. This is a new dawn. There’s a lot to be done, and by the grace of God, it will be done.”

Additionally, he further acknowledged the critical role of the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa. He pledged to complement her efforts in repositioning the sector.

“The responsibility bestowed on her is weighty, and even with the limited resources, she has been able to push ahead. I am here to complement her efforts,” he stated.

Acknowledging the contributions of his predecessors, Awakan affirmed his commitment to building upon their successes. “My predecessors have done excellently well to the best of their ability, and the baton of leadership has been passed to me. I will take it up from here,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of teamwork, innovation, and inclusivity, Awakan emphasised the need for a collaborative approach to achieve the Authority’s mandate. “We need newness and freshness, and I can’t do it alone. We need collaborative effort,” he said, adding, “I operate an open-door policy; no idea is a bad idea; it can be refined into a fantastic one. Let’s make history together and make Mr. President proud.”

Awakan, an award-winning journalist, thespian, dramatist, poet, and culture and tourism enthusiast, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
