THE House of Representatives, on Tuesday, commanded the Committee on Basic Education and Services to direct investigation concerning the pattern of American universal school in Abuja and other worldwide schools in the Federal Capital Territory, for charging school expenses in dollars.
The determination of the House took after a movement by Honorable Emmanuel Agboola and 14 others on the “need to explore the abuse of guardians by the America International School, Abuja and some other universal schools.”
While moving the movement, he said the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had, on April 17, 2015 issued a roundabout No. BSD/D1/GEN/LAB/08/03 entitled: “Cash Substitution and Dollarisation of the Nigerian Economy” to change the money controls, focusing on that in accordance with areas 15, 20(1) and (5) of the CBN Act, it is unlawful to cost or designate the cost of any item or administration in any remote money in Nigeria other than the naira.
The administrator, in any case, noticed that America International School, Abuja and some other universal schools in Nigeria were gathering expenses in outside monetary forms in opposition to CBN’s approach.
The worldwide schools, he included, slighted the surviving budgetary directions notwithstanding when it was slanted to gather the expenses in naira and could acknowledge the naira just on the parallel market rate and on the overall rate for the day.
Talking further, he said the schools infrequently depended on the utilization of parallel market rate to decide the measure of expenses to be gathered in naira, which involved that guardians paid school charges at various rates.
This development, he said, “depends on the rate in the black market and as such, parents of children in the same class end up paying different fees for their children, depending on the day the payment was made.”
