Online news publishers, under the aegis of the South West Guild of Online Publishers (SWEGOP), have called for immediate security upgrades in border communities following the successful rescue of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
Military Triumph in Oyo State
The security operation, executed on Friday by a combined team of military and paramilitary personnel, ended a six-month captivity for the victims. The pupils and teachers were abducted half a year ago from their schools within the Oriire Local Government Area.
In a joint statement released on Sunday, SWEGOP Chairman Bisi Oladele and Public Relations Officer Remi Oladoye commended President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, and the tactical forces involved. The group described the rescue of the more than 40 citizens as a direct result of political will and inter-agency collaboration.
While praising the professionalism and resilience of the troops, the group acknowledged the human cost of the operation, extending condolences to the families of security personnel and residents killed during the incident.
Online News Publishers: Addressing the Vulnerability in Oyo State Border Security
The statement highlighted a recurring strategy by terrorist groups, noting that kidnappers consistently target frontier settlements due to systemic vulnerabilities.
According to online news publishers, these areas suffer from poor road infrastructure, deficient telecommunications infrastructure, minimal security presence, and porous borders that offer easy escape routes into neighbouring countries.
SWEGOP urged both the federal and Oyo State governments to transition from reactive rescue missions to proactive containment. The body recommended sustained funding for community policing, intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance, and rapid-response units to secure rural educational institutions.
The group reaffirmed their commitment to public safety reporting and pledged continued journalistic oversight regarding security infrastructure across the South-West region.
