The University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Professor Peter Olapegba as its 14th Vice-Chancellor following a competitive selection process.

The institution’s Governing Council confirmed the decision on Wednesday after approving recommendations from a joint Council-Senate selection board.

Professor Olapegba, who currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, will assume office on 1 November 2026 when the incumbent’s tenure expires.

The announcement concludes months of formal preparations that began in April when the university declared the upcoming vacancy.

Six candidates submitted applications following advertisements in national newspapers and official university publications, prompting the university to deploy a search team for additional contenders.

Two further candidates joined the field through the search team, bringing the final applicant pool to eight.

The Governing Council evaluated all eight contenders on Tuesday, shortlisting five candidates for final interviews based on merit scores.

Selection board members drawn from both the Governing Council and the University Senate conducted final assessments on Wednesday morning before confirming the outcome.

University of Ibadan Vice-Chancellor Selection Signals Institutional Continuity

The decision to appoint an internal administrator reflects a clear choice by the Governing Council to maintain operational stability.

As West Africa’s oldest degree-awarding university, Ibadan holds a central position in regional academia, where executive changes influence higher education policy across the country.

By selecting the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, the board chose an executive with direct experience in managing the institution’s complex internal governance.

Higher education analysts note that internal leadership appointments reduce transition friction, allowing incoming executives to implement policy goals without orientation delays.

The university faces growing operational challenges, including rising utility expenses, infrastructure maintenance, and shifting federal funding allocations.

Professor Olapegba’s background in administrative oversight gives him direct exposure to these fiscal and structural pressures.

His academic background as a professor of psychology and social science fellow adds academic authority to his administrative record.

The selection process adhered strictly to statutory provisions in the University Act, demonstrating procedural compliance throughout every stage.

Transparent selection frameworks remain vital for maintaining confidence across public universities, where leadership disputes have historically disrupted academic schedules.

Governance Framework and Structural Challenges Facing Nigerian Tertiary Education

The recruitment strategy combined open public advertisements with active search operations to gather a broad list of candidates.

Statutory rules mandated that two representatives from the Governing Council and two elected members from the University Senate form the interview panel.

This joint structure ensures that administrative governors and academic staff share responsibility for selecting executive leadership.

The five shortlisted candidates completed comprehensive interviews before the joint board submitted its single recommendation to Council.

The upcoming transition in November provides a three-month window for administrative handover between the outgoing and incoming leadership teams.

During this period, the incoming administration must set clear operational priorities to address research funding targets and student housing requirements.

Federal budgetary constraints continue to tighten, forcing public institutions to seek private research grants and commercial partnerships.

How the new executive balances union relations with fiscal discipline will shape Ibadan’s academic output over the coming five-year term.

The appointment comes as West African universities seek broader international collaboration to improve global research metrics and institutional rankings.

Higher education leaders across the region face growing pressure to modernise digital learning platforms and align degree programmes with workforce demands.

As Ibadan prepares for this administrative shift, regional education observers will monitor how the new Vice-Chancellor handles structural reform across faculties.
