World’s Slowest Penalty Run-Up: Trayvone Reid Takes Stutter-Step Penalty for Mount Pleasant Against Club Sando

Jamaican forward Trayvone Reid has become an internet talking point after producing an extraordinarily slow penalty run-up during Mount Pleasant FA’s Concacaf Caribbean Cup semifinal against Trinidad and Tobago’s Club Sando.

The unusual spot kick, which ended with an easy save by goalkeeper Teshorne Ragoo, quickly attracted attention online and sparked reactions from football fans who struggled to believe what they were watching.

Reid’s Unusual Penalty Leaves Fans Stunned

The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during the first leg of the Caribbean Cup semifinal at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Mount Pleasant had already taken the lead through Warner Brown’s 11th-minute goal when the Jamaican side received an opportunity to double its advantage from the penalty spot.

Reid stepped forward to take responsibility, but instead of making a conventional approach to the ball, he began an unusually slow, stutter-step run-up that appeared to stretch the moment far longer than expected.

Leading 1–0 in the 35th minute, the Jamaican outfit had a prime opportunity to double their cushion after the referee awarded a penalty kick. Up stepped Reid, who proceeded to execute an extraordinarily slow, tiptoe stutter-step run-up.

Taking nearly 20 seconds to reach the ball with agonizingly small, hopping steps, Reid’s hyper-delayed approach completely backfired.

However, the lengthy approach failed to produce the desired result. When Reid eventually struck the ball, his effort lacked sufficient power and direction, allowing Ragoo to make a comfortable save and keep Club Sando in the contest, leaving commentators and fans stunned

The wasted spot-kick proved costly for Mount Pleasant. Club Sando found an equalizer in the second half via Daniel David, forcing the first leg to end in a 1–1 draw.

Footage of Reid’s painstaking buildup immediately went viral across social media, drawing comparisons to Simone Zaza’s infamous Euro 2016 penalty run-up and earning Reid widespread internet mockery.

A Missed Opportunity That Proved Costly

Reid’s penalty miss became more significant as the match progressed.

Mount Pleasant had the opportunity to establish a two-goal advantage, which would have placed the defending champions in a stronger position heading into the second leg.

Instead, Club Sando capitalised on the opportunity to remain competitive. Daniel David equalised in the 56th minute, bringing the match to a 1-1 draw.

The result left the semifinal finely balanced ahead of the return fixture in Jamaica, with both sides still fighting for a place in the final.

The missed penalty therefore became more than an unusual football moment. It represented a potentially decisive opportunity that Mount Pleasant failed to convert in an important continental fixture.

Social Media Reacts to the Viral Moment

Footage of Reid’s extraordinary approach quickly circulated across social media, with viewers comparing his movement to a slow-motion walk rather than a conventional penalty run-up.

The incident also reignited discussions about the effectiveness of elaborate penalty techniques. While stutter steps and changes of pace are sometimes used to unsettle goalkeepers, the ultimate objective remains putting the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

In Reid’s case, the extended approach created suspense but failed to deliver a goal.

Although the incident has attracted descriptions such as the “world’s slowest penalty run-up,” there is no verified evidence establishing it as an official world record.

Nevertheless, its unusual nature has made it one of the most talked-about penalty attempts from the Caribbean Cup in recent days.

What Happens Next?

Mount Pleasant and Club Sando are scheduled to meet again in the second leg on October 22, 2026, in Jamaica, where the two teams will battle for a place in the Caribbean Cup final.

For Reid, the attention surrounding his penalty miss could become a defining talking point from the first leg. However, the forward will have an opportunity to redirect the conversation through his performances in the matches ahead.

The episode serves as a reminder that football can produce unforgettable moments for reasons that have little to do with spectacular goals or extraordinary saves.

Sometimes, an unusual approach to the ball, followed by a missed opportunity, is enough to capture the attention of football fans around the world.
