The League of Veteran Journalists in Oyo State has issued a warning regarding a public lecture slated for Monday, October 26, 2026. The event is scheduled to take place at the Millennium Hall, NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
According to a release by its Chairman, Banji Ogundele, the event is purportedly organised by a phantom body known as the Veteran Journalists’ Association of Nigeria.
The leadership felt obliged to put it into the public domain that only one legitimate body exists. Established in 1988, the official organisation proudly bears the name of the League of Veteran Journalists.
Protecting the Legacy of Veteran Journalists
A long list of eminent media practitioners makes up this distinguished body. Notable members include Aremo (Veteran) Olusegun Osoba, Vet. Felix A. Adenaike, and Vet. Bamiji Ojo. Other respected figures include Vet. Layi Agbaje, Vet. Tunde Akingbade, and Vet. Agboola Sanni. The roster also names Vet. Kola Animasaun, Vet. Jare Ajayi, Vet. Bose Oyewole, and Vet. Oladele Idris. Furthermore, the group includes Vet. Biodun Oduwole, Vet. Lanre Ogundipe, Vet. Shade Haastrup, and Vet. Bolaji Kareem, to mention just a few.
This press release is necessary to prevent members of the public from being hoodwinked. Certain elements are operating purely on a self-serving mission. The leadership feels obliged to alert citizens to stop any attempt to drag the noble profession of journalism into the mud,” the release reads in part.
Standards Maintained by Oyo State Media Practitioners
The official body was established in 1988, as stated earlier. It consists exclusively of journalists and media practitioners who have put in not less than 25 years of active service.
The core objectives of the League of Veteran Journalists include:
- Enhancement of journalism by upholding and protecting press freedom.
- Ensuring that the codes of ethics of the profession are complied with at all times.
- Encouraging public awareness through discourses, analysis, and reviews.
- Promoting and protecting the interests and welfare of members.
The public is urged to disregard any unauthorised events. Only official channels represent true veteran journalists in the region.
