Nigeria’s Super Falcons have dropped seven places to 43rd in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released on October 20, 2026, following a difficult run of results that has raised fresh concerns about the team’s international standing.

The 10-time African champions fell from 36th position in the previous ranking published in June, losing 83.54 points to finish with 1,518.02 points. Despite the decline, Nigeria remain Africa’s highest-ranked women’s national team.

WAFCON Disappointment Hits Super Falcons

The latest ranking setback follows a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Nigeria failed to reach the semi-finals for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The Super Falcons began the competition with a 3-2 defeat to Malawi but recovered with victories over Zambia and Egypt to progress from the group stage.

However, their campaign ended with a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon, denying Nigeria an opportunity to compete for the continental title.

The team subsequently suffered another major disappointment in the race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, losing 2-1 to South Africa in the qualification play-off.

That defeat ended Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

Nigeria Still Lead African Women’s Football Rankings

Although the seven-place drop represents a significant setback, the Super Falcons remain the highest-ranked women’s national team in Africa.

South Africa occupy 59th position globally, followed by Cameroon in 62nd and Morocco in 64th. Ghana are ranked 65th, while Zambia occupy 70th place.

Cameroon gained nine places following their continental success, highlighting the growing competitiveness of women’s football across Africa.

Malawi recorded the biggest improvement in the latest global ranking, climbing 49 places to 104th after reaching the WAFCON final and securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The contrasting movements underline the increasing pressure on established African teams to maintain consistent performances as other nations continue to improve.

Spain Maintain Global Lead

At the top of the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, Spain retained first place ahead of the United States and Germany.

Spain strengthened their position after defeating the United States 2-0 before drawing 2-2 in their second meeting during the October international window.

England remain fourth, followed by Japan, France, Brazil, Sweden, Canada and Denmark in the global top 10.

What Next for the Super Falcons?

For Nigeria, the immediate priority is rebuilding confidence and restoring consistency following a difficult period in international football.

Despite their disappointing WAFCON campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, the Super Falcons have an opportunity to regain momentum through upcoming international assignments.

Their progress in the African qualifying campaign for the 2028 Olympic Games offers another opportunity to demonstrate their strength and competitiveness.

However, Nigeria will need improved performances against their continental rivals if they are to recover lost ranking points and strengthen their position ahead of future international competitions.

The latest FIFA rankings serve as a reminder that Nigeria’s historic achievements must be supported by consistent results on the pitch.

For a team that has dominated African women’s football for decades, the challenge now is to turn this setback into motivation for a stronger comeback.
