A member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Akin Alabi has filed a motion before the green chambers asking for an urgent dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The unit of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has become a thorn in the flesh of Nigerian youths, harassing them in most parts of the country on a daily basis.

For over four years, the hashtag #EndSARS has been a trending topic on Nigerian Twitter almost every other week with Nigerians calling on the authorities to disband the dreaded unit of the NPF.

Representative Akin Alabi is one of the youngest members in the House of Reps and his active on social media.

Alabi, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, said there is enough evidence in the public domain to proscribe SARS immediately, warning that the unit has committed enough atrocities.

He said SARS operatives have become so lawless that even the Inspector General of Police, IGP, can no longer contain their excesses, decrying how Nigerians now harbour untold fear of the deadly and corrupt unit.

The federal lawmaker said:

“Policing in Nigeria continues to fall short of modern practices where citizens should be treated with utmost respect and decorum, therefore making it very difficult for an average citizen to truly trust that the police are their friends.”

The lawmakers were notified of the motion on Monday, October 5 and would likely be considered at a plenary this week.

The demand came after a widespread outcry against SARS deadly and crooked conduct led to an emotional weekend for the country.

Reporters At Large had earlier reported that the IGP in response to call and agitation from Nigerian to #EndSARS, have banned personnel of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) from carrying out routine protocols.

The new directive from the IGP also affects operatives of other tactical squads of the police such as the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Anti-Cultism Squad.

The operatives, according to the order are to desist from carrying out routine patrols and other conventional low-risk duties – stop and search duties, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks, traffic checks.
