The family of a former governor of Oyo State, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, has debunked the news of his death as widely reported on social media earlier today.

The family of the former governor made this known in a short statement, revealing that Dr. Olunloyo is still alive, recuperating at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The Olunloyo Family, in the official statement, however, disclosed that the former Second Republic governor acknowledged that he is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the UCH, Ibadan.

The family thanked Nigerians for their concerns over the state of health of Dr. Olunloyo and called for their support in prayer for him.

“We appreciate the public for the interest shown in the well-being of our father, Chief Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo (aka VOSO).

“In the tradition of the Olunloyo Family of Ibadanland, and based on the principles of integrity, inclusion, and openness upon which our revered father VOSO has always stood, we would like to inform the Nigerian public that we would greatly appreciate your prayers for our father, who is presently in the ICU at UCH, Ibadan.

“As a public figure, we believe that his condition should not be hidden from the Nigerian public, who have a right to know about their leaders.

“Please accept our most sincere thanks for your all concern and goodwill. May God Almighty bless you all and our dear country, Nigeria,” the Olunloyo Family stated in the statement.

Who’s Omololu Olunloyo?

Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo was elected, in 1983, as the governor of the old Oyo State on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

He defeated the then-incumbent governor, the late Chief Bola Ige, who was of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), in the 1983 general election to become governor.

However, Olunloyo ruled over the affairs of the state for just three months, from 1 October 1983 to 31 December 1983, following the military coup led by Major General Muhammadu Buhari, which terminated the Second Republic under the leadership of the late former President Aliyu Usman Shehu Shagari.
