Joe Biden norminate Lisa Franchetti as first woman to head US military branches

Lisa Franchetti is on track to be the first woman to head one of the US military branches.

United States President Joe Biden has chosen Lisa Franchetti, a female admiral to lead the US Navy. That was the first time a woman has been nominated to head a Pentagon military service branch.

Lisa Franchetti previously oversaw the US 6th Fleet, US Navy forces stationed in South Korea, and aircraft carrier strike commander duties.

The US Senate must yet approve Biden’s nomination of her.

To protest a military abortion policy, one legislator is currently preventing the Senate from confirming military leaders.

She will be the first woman to join the exclusive club of senior military leaders that makes up the Joint Chiefs of Staff if she is confirmed as Chief of Naval Operations.

In a statement, Biden praised her for having “extensive expertise in both the operational and policy arenas” and predicted that, if confirmed for the position, she “will again make history.”

According to sources in US media, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin selected TOPGUN graduate Samuel Paparo as the next Navy chief rather than Adm. Franchetti as his first pick.

Additionally, Biden elevated Adm. Paparo by proposing him for the position of US military force commander in the Pacific.

Admiral Linda Fagan, a woman, is currently in charge of the US Coast Guard, a military branch that reports to the Department of Homeland Security rather than the Department of Defence.

When the current chief’s four-year term is up in the autumn, Adm. Franchetti is scheduled to take over. However, she will start out in the position in an acting capacity because it’s unlikely that the split senate will quickly confirm her.

Tommy Tuberville, a Republican from Alabama, is now preventing the Senate from approving more than 270 military promotions because of a Pentagon policy that reimburses service personnel for their travel costs when they must travel out of state for an abortion.

Senator Tuberville was attacked by Biden in his statement, which stated that “what Senator Tuberville is doing is not only wrong—it is dangerous.”

He added: “He is risking our ability to ensure that the United States Armed Forces remain the greatest fighting force in the history of the world. And his Republican colleagues in the Senate know it.”
