The maiden edition of the Oba Ghandi Olaoye Golf Tournament was tee-off Saturday morning by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III.
Oba Ghandi, who arrived at the Ogbomoso Recreation Club venue with chairman Central Planning Committee Professor Adesola Adepoju, traditional chiefs and others, was received by the president of the club, Dr Akin Oladeji John Brown, and the captain of the club, Chief Pekun Olaleye, among others.
The king and his entourage were conducted around the exhibition ground, and the ORC Golf Section was later commissioned.
Oba Ghandi commended the initiative of the Ogbomoso Recreation Club, expressed his delight at its transformation, and promised to ensure greater investment in sport.
He also said, “We will create this annual event that will attract golfers from all over the world to Ogbomoso and have a great impact on the economy of Ogbomoso.”
The president of the Club, Dr Akin Oladeji John Brown, interviewed journalists and said they organised the tournament to mark the historical event of Oba Ghandi Olaoye’s coronation in Ogbomoso.
He added that over 150 golfers nationwide have arrived to participate in the tournament, “and I believe more pro golfers will be part of it by next year.”
We are ready to work with Kabiesi to make Ogbomoso a sports tourism hub. A golf tournament would be an attraction that would attract people to this city.
The programme will end today with a gala night and presentation of prizes to winners and others.
