Marcel Leijzer, Manager of Technical Cooperation at the United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism), has praised the people of Ekiti State and Nigerians for their exceptional hospitality following his recent visit to the state.

On the eve of the UN delegation’s departure, Leijzer made these comments at a press conference in Lagos hosted by the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development. He described the welcoming nature of Nigerians as “incredibly amazing” and emphasized its potential to boost tourism in the region significantly.

His visit, from August 17 to August 22, included a comprehensive assessment of over 20 tourism sites across Ekiti State. Some of the notable landmarks he explored were the Ekiti Parapo War Museum in Okemesi-Ekiti, the Ikogosi Warm Springs, Mount Golgotha in Efon-Alaye-Ekiti, Ogun Grove in Ire-Ekiti, Poroye Grove in Ijan, the source of the Osun River in Igede, Ewo War Relics in Ilupeju-Ekiti, the Adire Ekiti Hub, Orole Hill in Ikere-Ekiti, and the Sacred Fish Stream in Erinjiyan-Ekiti.

Other highlights of his tour included a visit to the unique palm tree with 42 heads in Ilogbo-Ekiti, the first mass centre in Usi-Ekiti, and the sacred Olosunta Rock in Ikere-Ekiti. The state’s wide variety of attractions, which includes historical and cultural sites as well as natural wonders like dramatic rock formations and waterfalls, captivated Leijzer throughout his journey.

Leijzer also had the opportunity to experience the vibrant cultural life of Ekiti, particularly the Udiroko Festival in Ado-Ekiti. He noted, “It seems there is hardly a week without one or two celebrations.”

Reflecting on his experience, Leijzer stated, “This visit to Ekiti was nothing short of amazing. The natural beauty, combined with the warmth and friendliness of the people, is unparalleled. I have been to 55 countries, and I have never encountered such naturally beautiful attractions.”

He also outlined UN Tourism’s objectives: “Our goal is to deliver technical cooperation and build capacity within the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism. We will also utilize our social media platforms to promote Ekiti as a prime tourism destination and provide guidance on sector development.”

On a personal note, Leijzer expressed his fondness for Nigerian cuisine, particularly Fufu and pounded yam, and highlighted his enjoyment of the abundant seafood in the region. He specifically commended the management of Ikogosi Resort and praised the services at Davies Travel Lodge, where he enjoyed a delightful seafood meal.

Wale Ojo-Lanre, Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, expressed his excitement about the UN team’s visit and the promising future for tourism development in the state. He also praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his support, viewing the visit as a significant step toward advancing Ekiti’s tourism industry.
