After coming close to winning the 90-year-old Scripps National Spelling Bee with a botanical term in the previous round, Zaila Avant-garde, 14, became the first African American to do it on Thursday by properly spelling the plant genus "Murraya." The tournament finals were broadcast live on ESPN with play-by-play commentary and participant interviews after being postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak last year. At the Walt Disney World Resort close to Orlando, it was once more presented live to an audience. Since Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica in 1998, Avant-garde, a contender from New Orleans, is the first Black person to win. The winner is a skilled basketball player who holds numerous Guinness World Records for simultaneously dribbling multiple basketballs.
