Two US troops were killed in Jordan, and a third was left missing after an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on Friday.
The assault marks the first American military fatalities in the conflict with Iran since March.
United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the casualties occurred during a coordinated bombardment targeting Western and allied assets in the region.
Four other American personnel were hospitalised following the strikes but have since been discharged, while several others received treatment for minor injuries.
The Pentagon has stated that the identities of the deceased soldiers will be withheld for 24 hours to ensure next of kin are fully notified.
Washington faces critical choices as regional conflict deepens
This strike represents a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran. For months, Western strategy has focused on containing regional proxy warfare and preventing a direct clash with Iran. The loss of American lives on Jordanian soil shatters that containment policy, forcing the White House to consider direct retaliatory measures that could trigger a wider regional war.
Jordan, a staunch Western ally, serves as a crucial logistics and intelligence hub for coalition forces. By breaching these air defences, Tehran has demonstrated both the sophistication of its missile arsenal and its willingness to strike targets beyond the immediate borders of Israel and Iraq.
CENTCOM confirms search operation for missing soldier
Military officials have launched an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the service member who remains unaccounted for.
In an official statement detailing the incident, CENTCOM outlined the scale of the engagement:
“On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing in action,” CENTCOM said in a social media post.
Diplomatic sources suggest that the scale of the American response will depend heavily on whether the missing service member is found or if they have been captured by regional militias aligned with Tehran.
