Asya Branch, the 2018 Miss Mississippi winner, was most recently crowned Miss Mississippi USA. She was the first Black woman to hold the title in the organisation’s 67-year history.
She will compete in the Miss USA 2020 competition on behalf of Mississippi.
Asya, a native of Booneville, Mississippi, is attractive and intelligent. At the age of 17, she earned a degree from the University of Mississippi and started taking classes at Harvard.
She hopes her new platform as Miss Mississippi USA will motivate kids whose parents are behind bars. She stated that her father had spent nearly half of her life in prison, so she had personal knowledge of how difficult that was.
“My dad is in jail, and I’m a daughter, a sister, a student, a leader on campus and in the community, as well as a babysitter for a child with special needs.”
According to her profile on the Miss America website, Asya commented, “Talk about getting the attention of a classroom full of rowdy kids.”
“The Miss America organisation has given me the confidence to celebrate my history while assisting others in realising their most promising futures. I am thankful for the chance to show people they are not limited or doomed by the deeds of others, but rather they can accomplish successes beyond their wildest dreams, she said.
“Our nation cannot afford to ignore the fallout from a family serving a joint sentence.”
Asya will represent Mississippi in the Miss USA competition. The Miss USA winner will represent the country in the Miss Universe competition.
Black women have had success in prestigious beauty pageants this year. All Black women won the Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA titles for the first time. Additionally, Miss Tennessee selected its first Black champion.
