Giving birth to particular sex has been one of the major issues in marriages, especially in some tribes in Nigeria. For instance, the inability to give birth to a male child has cost some women their marriages, and or joy in their marriages. It has thus become a norm to have a mixture of the two sexes – male and female.

Following the above, couples, especially women are in a continued search of knowledge about, and solution to having a mixture of both gender in their childbirth

In this article are some ways to deliberately choose the sex of your child.

Though there are a lot of different theories and approaches to natural gender selection, without a shred of strong anecdotal evidence, hence they have no medical expert backing

However, the following are some of the most popular sex selection methods around:

1 Timing of sex – It is said that female sperm are heavier and live longer than male sperm, therefore having sex a few days before ovulation and then abstain (to enable the male sperm to die), would likely increase the chances of conceiving a girl.

And because male sperm are said to be lighter in weight and swim faster than female ones so are more likely to reach the egg, having sex on the day of ovulation would likely increase the chances of conceiving a boy.

This theory was developed by Dr Landrum Shettles in the US in the 1960s.

2 Sexual position: Male sperm are said to be more vulnerable while the vagina becomes less acidic closer to the cervix, a deep penetration ( with the woman-on-top or the man-behind positions), would push the male sperm into a more alkaline environment, which would enable it to survive the short journey. With this, a boy child is more likely. But if the penetration is shallow, the chances of conceiving a girl child would be higher. This is because the slower female sperm are strong enough to withstand the acidic conditions at the opening to the vagina, hence it could make it through to the egg after the male sperm have died off.

3 Male sexual abstinence: Avoiding sex for a few days before making love can increase your chances of conceiving a boy. This is because the greater the volume of sperm, the more male sperm should be present, so probably there’s a greater likelihood that a male sperm endures and fertilises the egg before a female sperm can catch up with it.

4 Changing your diet: The minerals in the man’s diet could affect his metabolism and the environment of his eggs. As a result, you can improve the conditions for male sperm with increased potassium, which you can get in meat, bananas, apricots and celery. While you can improve the conditions for female sperm with increased magnesium-rich food, which you can get in nuts, soya beans and leafy green vegetables.

5 Timing of orgasm: The vagina becomes more alkaline if the woman reaches orgasm before the man partner, thereby creating a better environment for male sperm. Because female sperm survive better in the naturally acidic environment of your vagina, climaxing first would favour the conception of a male child.
