The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has directed that the salaries of political appointees be slashed by 50%.
The Commissioner for Information and Values Orientation, Aare Muyiwa Olumilua made this known in a release he signed in Ado Ekiti.
The release which stated that the pay cut will affect the Governor, the Deputy Governor and all political appointees down the line however exempted civil servants from the pay cut.
He expatiated that the pay cut will be channeled into the execution of developmental projects across the state to enable the administration fulfill promises made to the Ekiti people while seeking their mandate.
Olumilua described the decision as a moral duty of political appointees at improving the welfare of Ekiti people, stressing that this sacrifice for Ekiti people should take pre-eminence over and above all other considerations.
The Commissioner stated that, the dwindling Internally Generated Revenue(IGR), constant decrease receipts from the Federation Accounts has forced the Fayemi – led administration to wake up to the current realities of the fiscal position as a responsive and responsible government, adding that it is the time to make difficult decisions.
The commissioner explained further that the ravaging effect of the COVID-19 scourge which has severely affected the global economy with the depression effect on Nigeria and expectedly on Ekiti State have resulted into a low ebb financial situation of Ekiti State as well.
He appreciated the patriotism, patient and cooperation of the political class all the times.
