The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked Mahmood Yakubu to use his reappointment as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve future elections.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the spokesperson for the PDP in a statement on Wednesday, October 28, asked Yakubu to prepare for credible, free and fair elections in Nigeria.
He said the INEC chairman should use his next five-year tenure to remedy the image of the electoral commission.
Ologbondiyan said: “It is therefore instructive to state that with his re-appointment, Prof Yakubu has been given an ample time and opportunity to redeem himself, the image of the commission and preparation for credible, free and fair elections in our country.”
The PDP spokesperson warned that the INEC chairman cannot make excuses based on inexperience or lack of adequate preparedness anymore.
The party said Yakubu has almost two years to make the next general election credible.
Ologbondiyan urged the INEC chairman to look into issues such as, rigging, violence and inconclusive elections which marred elections in his previous tenure.
The party noted that the bedrock of any democratic society rests on credible elections.
