Three suspected members of an armed robbery gang have been nabbed by policemen from Ogun State Police Command.
The suspects, Bamidele Oluwashina (31), Adebowale Kehinde (32) and Oluwasegun Abayomi were arrested on Thursday, November 22, 2020 while robbing residents of Iju Ota in the state.
The robbery gang was said to have been terrorizing Iju Ota and its environs for some time.
In a statement issued by him on Sunday, November 15, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said that the suspects were arrested after a distress call was received by the police at Onipanu divisional headquarters at about 9:30p.m., that armed robbers had invaded Iju Love Bus Stop and tipper lorry park, wielding dangerous weapons and dispossessing people of their valuables.
“Upon the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Onipanu Division, CSP Bamidele Ishola Job mobilized his patrol team to the scene and engaged the robbers in a gun duel.
“Having realized the superior fire power of the police, the hoodlums took to their heels, but one of them was arrested at the scene.
“The entire area was cordoned off, while the police intensified search for other members of the gang.
“With the help of members of the community, two other members of the gang were sighted trying to escape on a tricycle, but were promptly arrested,” Oyeyemi stated.
He added that one Tosin Ajayi, who was inflicted with machete cuts on the head by the hoodlums, was quickly taken to the hospital by the police for medical treatment.
The PPRO further disclosed that a cut-to-size locally-made pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.
Oyeyemi said that the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun had ordered the transfer of the suspects to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Abeokuta for discreet investigation.
He added that the police commissioner appealed to the general public not to allow cultists in their areas, as they were associated with all forms of crime.
“The Commissioner of Police also assures the good people of the state that the command’s Violent Crime Intervention Squad is battle ready to combat any violent crime across the state,” the PPRO concluded.
