FARMERS from Egbe community in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, on Monday, protested against the incessant destruction of farmlands and crops worth millions of naira by suspected herdsmen in the area.
The protest saw all farmers within and around the community crying and wailing, just as they called on the state government to urgently intervene in the situation in order to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the area.
Spokesperson of the farmers, Mr Wale Oti, while speaking with newsmen, lamented that farm produce waiting to be harvested and worth millions of naira had been destroyed by herdsmen with their cattle.
Oti explained that Egbe is a boundary town between Kogi and Kwara states, with about 50,000 inhabitants whose major source of livelihood is farming.
He stated that the majority of the farmers had been enduring incessant destruction of their farmlands for years, but the situation became worse after the herdsmen arrived in droves following the invitation extended to them by the state government.
“We are, therefore, calling on the state government to call the herdsmen in the area to order to avoid incessant farmers/herders clashes,” Oti said.
