It took the swift intervention of police officers in the Lagos State Police Command to save a 29-year-old man, Sanni Gafar, from being lynched by mobs after he was accused of being a terrorist.
He was alleged to have disguised himself as a woman.
The incident occurred at Ijora Badia on Monday, August 15, 2022, at about 11am.
The police spokesman in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said that the mob descended on the alleged terrorist until the police arrived to rescue him.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the male suspect was found with a bag containing three hammers, six screwdrivers, one pair of pliers, one chisel, five spanners, three rolls of black cellophane, cable wires, a 20mm bending spring, a pair of black trousers, and a plastic box of clips.
He said that an investigation into the matter was ongoing to ascertain his claim that he was an electrician.
The state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, while commending residents of Lagos for their vigilance, warned against any form of jungle justice.
“All suspicious persons or movements are to be reported to security agencies,” the police commissioner said.
