The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, is dead.
RT. Hon Afuye died on Wednesday evening, 19 October 2022, at Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest, a statement made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yinka Oyebode, revealed.
“The Government of Ekiti State regrets to announce the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Funminiyi Afuye,” the statement read.
“Rt. Hon Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.
“The late Afuye, 66, was a former Commissioner of Ekiti State Ministry of Information and a two-time member of the State Assembly. He was inaugurated Speaker of the Sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.”
Also confirming the development, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Yemisi Ayokunle, said the House had yet to take any concrete decision, but a meeting of the members would be held on Thursday to map out plans.
She said a press statement on the Speaker’s death would soon be made public by the Assembly.
The late Afuye, 66, was a former commissioner of the Ekiti State Ministry of Information and a two-time member of the State Assembly. He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.
The Speaker was full of life at Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s inauguration on Sunday, 16 October.
REPORTERS AT LARGE gathered that the speaker joined the governor to inspect inadequate portions of roads in Ado Ekiti yesterday before he was said to have developed cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital for attention.
