Legendary Afro-beat singer Fela Anikulapo Kuti should not have had children. According to his eldest daughter, Yeni Kuti, he wasn’t a good father commercially.
Yeni Kuti disclosed this in an interview with Chude Jideonwo a few hours ago. In it, she discussed her family deeply and revealed the later years of the Late Fela Kuti.
She said while answering Chude’s question about whether Fela was a good Father, “In his way, yes, but in the commercial sense, NO! I don’t think he should have had children; he should have just been a father to the nation.”
She disclosed this while also saying the children felt no special bond of being Fela’s children.
In her words, Yeni described the Late singer as someone who just sees you as another human being: “He was different. For instance, we didn’t call him daddy.” She continued, “I don’t feel any special bond that you are Fela’s child.”
Yeni, who was less emotional, believed her father didn’t die a happy man; she told Chude that he was in pain when he died.
She said, ”That’s a very tough question because he was quite ill, and someone that was ill, I don’t think, can be happy.”
Yeni, who left no stone unturned about the death of her father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, believes her late father’s brother made the right decision by announcing he had died of complications arising from AIDS.
She said, “If he had not announced it, media would still be doing underground investigations trying to figure out what killed him.”
She ended by saying she didn’t want to talk about it anymore just to avoid her crying in the studio.
