The Polytechnic Ibadan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with some artisans, under the aegis of MasterCrafts Professionals in Oyo State, to enhance vocational and technical education in the country.
The inauguration and signing of the MoU took place at the North Campus Assembly Hall of the the Polytechnic on Wednesday in Ibadan.
The event was facilitated by Skill Development Centre of the institution.
The trades comprised Automobile Repairs, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical Installation, Masonry and Welding and Fabrication.
Speaking on the importance of the MoU, the Southwest Zonal Director, National Board for Technical education, Mr Ayodele Aroge, said it was necessary to promote vocational education considering the present situation of the nation.
He noted that certificate from the programme had gained the favour of the Federal Government such that certificates from level one to six had been embedded into the Federal Scheme of Service.
“What this means is that anybody with the certificates can get employment into federal ministries with it,” Aroge said.
He enjoined states to take a cue from the Federal Government and employe people with these certificates into state civil service.
Also, the Director, Skills Development Centre, TPI, Mr Wakeel Bolaji said the MoU represented a strategic alliance aimed at harnessing the expertise of seasoned industry professionals to elevate the standard of vocational training at The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
He stated that the contributions would be in terms of expert training and mentorship; industry-relevant curriculum; practical workshops and apprenticeships; certification and accreditation among others.
“For learners, this collaboration means access to superior training resources, after understanding of their trades and improved employability.
“For MasterCrafts Professionals, it offers an opportunity to shape the next generation of skilled workers, ensuring the continuity and advancement of their trades,” Bolaji said.
According to him, the programme will enhance the reputation of the institution as a leading vocational education destination as well as foster stronger community ties.
Bolaji noted that the certificate would bear NBTE and UNESCO signatures under National Skills Qualifications Framework, making the certificate relevant throughout the world.
In his address, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Taiwo Lasisi, said the institution had once again set the pace for others to follow.
Lasisi, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Olaide Salawu, said the event was historical, adding that all over the world vocational skills were relevant and crucial in national development.
Also, Mr Adebisi Adeniyi, the Oyo State Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperative, said the role of craftsmanship in the Nigerian economy was unquantifiable and germane as crafts were exported to other country, generating significant revenue.
Adeniyi, represented by Mr Albert Olujide, said crafts played a crucial role in preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
Speaking at the event, the Oyo State Secretary, Bricklaying Association, Mr Wasiu Badmus, enjoined other artisans to fully participate in the programme.
“The MoU is a step to addressing the challenges facing the artisans as it would give us the needed qualification required to do so many things we are being denied of because we do not have certificates,” Badmus said.
