A heartbreaking tragedy has left 3-year-old Balkis Moshood as the sole survivor of her family after a tragic accident claimed the lives of her mother and two sisters.
Balkis, the youngest child of Kudirat Moshood, a banku vendor in Ogbomoso, expressed a heartbreaking desire to “die too” following the tragic loss of her family on Wednesday night.
The fatal accident, which occurred in the Apake area, took the lives of Kudirat, her 13-year-old daughter Mariam, and Azeezat. The three were reportedly returning from their food-selling stall at Takie when a trailer collided with their okada (motorbike), fatally injuring all three. The accident happened less than 200 meters from their stall.
Living in the Nana River/Atenda area, Kudirat and her three daughters managed their food business, with the children frequently helping. According to neighbours, Balkis, now in primary three, worked with her mother and older siblings to sell banku.
Neighbours who witnessed the tragedy report that Balkis, upon realising the loss of her mother and sisters, has been inconsolable. “She keeps saying she wants to die too,” shared one neighbour.
Hon. Adewuyi Adegbite, a neighbour, expressed the urgent need for community support for the orphaned girl.
“This little girl is now alone in the world. What happened is more than she can bear, and she needs assistance to navigate this tragedy. This is where compassionate individuals and the community must step in to help,” he said.
Residents and authorities are calling on well-meaning individuals to offer assistance to Balkis during this devastating time, as she tries to understand and cope with a loss that has upended her young life.
