Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, has assured Nigerians that their interest will be safeguarded during ongoing discussions on the recent approval of a 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs by the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC).
Olajide, who represents the Ibadan North-west/Ibadan South-west federal constituency of Oyo at the national assembly, stated that, though the commission settled on a 50% adjustment to balance industry sustainability with consumer affordability, the NCC’s decision, announced on January 20, 2025, came after telecom operators requested a 100% tariff hike to address escalating operational costs due to high inflation and currency devaluation.
He acknowledged telecom operators‘ challenges and emphasised the importance of protecting consumers, who will be most affected by the proposed tariff hike.
Though we understand the economic pressures on both the industry and the populace, we are committed to ensuring that any tariff adjustments are fair and justifiable,” he stated.
While urging the public to remain calm and patient as deliberations continue, Hon. Olajide assured Nigerians that the House of Representatives is closely monitoring the situation and will engage with all relevant stakeholders, including the NCC, telecom operators, and consumer advocacy groups, to ensure that Nigerians’ interests are prioritised.
