More revelations have come to light about the sudden and dramatic resignation of Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Contrary to speculation surrounding ill health as the reason for Ganduje’s sudden resignation, it has been revealed that he was directed to vacate his office as the APC national chairman amid a leadership crisis within the party.
The circumstances surrounding Ganduje’s resignation were not unrelated to the dramatic turn of events following the recent APC North-East Convention.
Tinubu-Shettima angle
The crisis, it was learnt, erupted after party leaders at the convention failed to endorse Vice President Kashim Shettima as the running mate to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The unexpected snub and rejection of Shettima by the APC in the North-East were said to have sent shockwaves through the ruling party’s ranks.
The circumstances surrounding the exit of the former governor of Kano State as the APC national chairman may have also put to rest speculation that he may emerge as the party’s vice presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
President Tinubu, reportedly visibly displeased with the convention’s outcome, was said to have taken decisive action.
Sources within the top hierarchy of the party disclosed that the president “wielded the big stick,” directing Ganduje to “step down immediately” as the APC National Chairman.
Cabinet shake-up imminent
Ganduje may not be the only fall guy, as it has been further revealed that the axe may fall on some members of the political party currently holding plum jobs in the President Tinubu-led administration.
Insiders within the party suggested that a cabinet shake-up may be imminent, with several top officials who were directly involved in the fallout of the convention likely to be shown the door.
