New Fakhar-l-Muminin Of Oyo State Urges Nigerians To Pray For Leaders

Dr. Mustapha Akanji, a renowned Islamic scholar and philanthropist, has been installed as the Fakhar-l-Muminin of Oyo State, marking a significant recognition of his contributions to the community.

During the installation ceremony held at the Ibadan Central Mosque, Oja’ba on Sunday, Dr. Akanji urged Nigerians to pray for their political leaders and speak positively about the country, emphasising the importance of unity and constructive dialogue for the betterment of the populace.

The ceremony, led by the League of Imams and Alfas of Oyo State, under the guidance of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdulganiy Abubakry Agbotomokekere, celebrated Dr. Akanji’s dedication to Islamic scholarship and humanitarian work. Dr. Akanji, born in Saki, is known for his extensive philanthropic activities.

In his address, Dr. Akanji highlighted the establishment of hospitals and a university in Saki as examples of his commitment to giving back to society. He described his new title as a sacred trust, promising to expand his philanthropic efforts to serve a wider range of Muslims.

He also announced plans to inaugurate an office in Ibadan to continue providing humanitarian assistance to both Muslim and non-Muslim individuals, aiming to improve their standard of living.

Sheikh Abdulganiy Abubakry Agbotomokekere, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, praised Dr. Akanji as a prominent Islamic scholar whose charitable work deserved recognition. Mufasir of Ibadanland, Sheikh (Dr) Baari Adetunji, encouraged Dr. Akanji to continue his philanthropic service in the advancement of Islam, underscoring the high value of charity in the sight of Allah. The Grand Mufti of Sakiland, Sheikh Ibrahim, offered prayers for Dr. Akanji’s success in fulfilling the responsibilities of his new status.

His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi, Oyedepo lll, the Okere of Saki, presented the staff of office, describing Dr. Akanji as a humble and worthy ambassador of Sakiland. The Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Dr Teliat Yunus Ayilara, also offered prayers for Dr. Akanji’s well-being, long life, and prosperity.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of a 2025 Toyota Landcruiser to Sheikh Abdulganiy Abubakry Agbotomokekere, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, by President Bola Tinubu, delivered by Senator Yunus Akintunde, representing the Oyo Central Senatorial District.

The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Senator Yunus Akintunde; Prof. K. K. Oloso; Barr. Abdulwaheed Lawal, Chairman, MURIC, Oyo State chapter; Sheikh Ashim Atere, Chairman, Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing); members of the Imam-in-Council of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland; Chief Imams from eleven local governments in Ibadanland, and Chief Imams from various zones. Representatives of the Olufon of Ifon Orolu, Ifon-Osun, Osun State, the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, and other prominent religious and community leaders were also present, celebrating the achievements and vision of the newly installed Fakhar-l-Muminin.
