Saudi Arabia has expelled five Iranian diplomats, giving them just 24 hours to leave the country. This move comes as tensions rise in the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Saudi authorities state they have faced repeated strikes on civilian areas and energy sites recently.
Diplomatic Ties Severed
According to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry, the expelled officials include Iran’s military attaché and his assistant. Three other embassy staff members were also ordered to leave.
The Saudi government said the decision followed “continued attacks carried out by Iran on its territory.” Officials noted that these actions contradict Islamic brotherhood and could further damage relations between the two nations.
Violations of International Law
The Ministry described the attacks as a breach of international rules and state sovereignty. They warned the situation could have major bilateral consequences.
“They also violate the Beijing Agreement, UN Security Council Resolution No. 2817, and contradict Islamic brotherhood and the values and principles of the Islamic religion that the Iranian side constantly speaks of, confirming that these are merely words not reflected by actions,” the Ministry added.
Drone Strikes in Riyadh
Earlier this month, two drones struck the United States Embassy in Riyadh. Officials attributed that attack to Iran. The unmanned aerial vehicles hit the diplomatic compound in the capital’s Diplomatic Quarter. Saudi sources confirmed the strike caused a limited fire and structural damage to the building.
