The Kebbi State House of Assembly has been plunged into mourning following the death of its Speaker, Muhammad Usman Zuru.
Zuru passed away on Monday night in an Egyptian hospital. He had been receiving treatment there for an undisclosed illness.
Sources close to the Kebbi State Government confirmed the heartbreaking news, though the specific nature of his illness remains private.
A Devastating Loss for Nigerian Politics
Representing the Zuru Constituency, the Speaker was far more than a politician; he was a cornerstone of the legislature. His sudden exit has left a profound void in legislative leadership and the wider landscape of Nigerian politics.
Idris Zuru, an aide to the governor on Communication and Strategy, spoke of the heavy hearts within the administration.
“The death of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Zuru, came to us as a rude shock. It is a painful loss not only to Kebbi State but to the entire nation,” he said.
A State in Mourning
The government is currently working to support the family during this difficult time. While the atmosphere remains somber, official steps are being taken to honour his memory.
“We are still gathering full details surrounding his passing. The government will make an official statement and announce burial arrangements in consultation with the family,” Zuru stated.
The people of Kebbi and colleagues across the country now wait to bid a final farewell. Further announcements regarding funeral arrangements are expected shortly from both the state and the bereaved family.
