Vice President Kashim Shettima has pledged to support the University of Ibadan in its quest to remain Nigeria’s premier university and reclaim its global glory.

He made this commitment during a courtesy visit by the university’s management team, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

UI Confers Historic Honour on Shettima

The Vice President was conferred with the University of Ibadan’s highest alumni award, UI@75 Ambassador Plenipotentiary, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the public and private sectors. This honour is a testament to his dedication and service, making him the only alumnus to receive this prestigious award.

Commitment to Education Reform

Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector through strategic support and reforms.

He emphasised that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will mobilise both public and private sector resources to support institutions like the University of Ibadan.

Shettima’s Vote of Confidence on UI

The Vice President expressed his delight at being honoured by his alma mater, stating that he will proudly display the plaque in his office as a reminder of his affiliation with the university. He also reflected on his days as a postgraduate student at UI, recalling the university’s international stature and diverse student body.

Shettima expressed confidence in Nigeria’s economic trajectory, stating that the country has turned a corner and is on the path to sustained economic growth. He attributed this growth to President Tinubu’s economic expertise and policies.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor had earlier disclosed that he led the special team from the university to perform the significant task, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the University of Ibadan, restating that the university was established in 1948 and had turned 75 years on 17 November 2023.

Professor Adebowale explained that the University, through its UI@75 Committee, decided to mark the landmark anniversary by carefully selecting notable Alumni of the University who have made an invaluable impact and contributed significantly to the advancement of the cause of humanity.

He stated that the University had earlier designated many alumni as UI@75 Ambassadors while notable friends and eminent personalities who are not Alumni of the University were designated as UI@75 Ambassadors Extraordinaire.
