Gunmen have kidnapped four cocoa farmers at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in the Idi-Ayunre area of Ibadan. The daring attack occurred on Wednesday, involving approximately six armed individuals.
Reports indicate that some victims were visiting the institute for a familiarisation tour when the incident happened.
A Narrow Escape in Idi-Ayunre
The ambush took place as the farmers travelled towards the Nursing Section of the institute. One farmer, who managed to flee the scene, described the terrifying moment the attackers appeared. He recounted that the gunmen suddenly emerged from the bush and intercepted their vehicle.
DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Oyo State, confirmed the abduction. She noted that security forces have already made progress in the initial hours of the investigation.
Police Launch Rescue Operation
Ayanlade confirmed that one of the four victims is now safe. “One of the four abducted victims had been successfully rescued, and his vehicle recovered,” she stated.
The Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Haruna, has now deployed the anti-kidnapping unit. These tactical teams are supporting the Divisional Police Officer in Idi-Ayunre to track the kidnappers.
Intensive Bush-Combing Underway
Police operatives have started an intensive search of the surrounding forest. The rescued farmer is currently in safe custody and undergoing debriefing to provide vital clues.
The PPRO reaffirmed the command’s commitment to resolving the crisis. “Efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and arrest the perpetrators,” she said.
