The number of people killed in the recent assault on Jos North Local Government Area has climbed to 28. Residents discovered more bodies at the scene on Monday, deepening the sense of grief and outrage across Plateau State.

The grim reality unfolded as more corpses were found on the ground, indicating a much higher casualty figure than officials first confirmed. Initially, the Plateau State Police Command reported 14 deaths following the late-night violence.

Police Response and Recovery Efforts

The Nigeria Police Force stated that senior officers and tactical teams are now on the ground to maintain order.

“Our officers, including members of the Command’s Management Team, PMF Squadron Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Team Commanders, are fully deployed to the area to ensure law and order is maintained,” the statement said.

The Command received distress calls reporting gunshots around the Angwan Rukuba axis at approximately 8:30 p.m. on 29 March. Commissioner of Police Ewah Bassey personally led a team to the scene to reduce tension.

While the police initially moved 14 victims to the mortuary for autopsy, journalists visiting the site later confirmed that the recovery of 28 bodies has taken place. Families continue to search for missing loved ones as the situation remains tense.

Plateau State Curfew Imposed

In response to the bloodshed in the Gari Ya Waye community, the Plateau State Government has ordered an immediate 48-hour Plateau State curfew for Jos North.

The directive, signed by Commissioner for Information and Communication Joyce Ramnap, restricts movement from midnight on 29 March until 1 April 2026.

“The Plateau State Government in conjunction with security agencies wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect, commencing from 12 midnight of 29th March to 1st April, 2026.”

The statement noted that Governor Caleb Mutfwang strongly condemns the “barbaric and unprovoked attack” and is taking all necessary steps to catch those responsible.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang Vows Justice

Governor Mutfwang visited the scene of the attack to meet with bereaved families. He promised that the state would handle the medical bills for those injured and ensure a proper burial for the deceased.

The Governor appealed to traditional and religious leaders to work with the government to solve these security challenges. He reiterated his commitment to restoring peace and unity across the state while security agencies continue their recovery efforts in the area.
