The political landscape for the 2027 Oyo North Senatorial Election has gained significant clarity. Bashorun Akinwale Solomon Akinwole (Wolekanle), the Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission, has pledged his full support to all candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming general elections.
Wolekanle, the Ogbomoso-born politician, confirmed his stance following the formal ratification of candidates by party stakeholders. This move solidifies the position of Hon Shina Peller as the senatorial hopeful, alongside various candidates for the House of Representatives and State House of Assembly.
Respecting the Oke-Ogun Zoning Arrangement
Wolekanle’s decision to decline himself a senatorial run stems from a deep-rooted respect for internal party structures. He noted that his choice honours the established Oke-Ogun zoning arrangement, which dictates the region should produce the next senator.
“I respect the party zoning arrangement and I am in full support of Oke-Ogun producing the next senator,” he stated.
By stepping down, Bashorun Akinwole aims to maintain party harmony. He described Hon Shina Peller as a seasoned politician and a friend. He expressed firm confidence that Peller will deliver on his promises and justify the trust the party has placed in him.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s Consensus Strategy
A key factor in this smooth transition is the leadership style of the state executive. Wolekanle praised Governor Seyi Makinde and other Oyo State PDP candidates for adopting a consensus-based approach. This strategy, he noted, ensured the selection process remained entirely “rancour-free.”
The Commissioner urged unity across the board. He appealed to other aspirants and supporters to rally behind the chosen representatives. To secure a total victory in 2027, he believes cooperation is the only path forward.
“He reaffirmed his commitment to working with other party leaders and stakeholders to ensure the party’s success at the polls,” the report concluded. This unified front marks a significant milestone for the PDP as they prepare for the upcoming general elections.
