The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has expressed disappointment over the failure of Alhaji Taofeek Akewugbagold to fully redeem his financial obligation to the union, revealing that only N2 million has been paid out of the N11 million owed despite assurances that the debt would be settled before the end of April 2026.
The union, at its monthly congress held on Saturday at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, said Alhaji Taofeek Akewugbagold should honour his commitment and immediately pay the outstanding balance to avoid legal action.

The resolution formed part of the communiqué issued at the end of the congress presided over by the State Chairman, Mr. Akeem Abas.

Security Concerns Dominate Congress
Congress also expressed deep concern over the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, urging security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts toward the safe and immediate rescue of all victims.
It commended the steps taken so far but stressed the need for greater deployment of resources, intelligence and operational strategies to secure their release.
The Oyo NUJ further condemned the rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities across the state, calling for proactive measures to tackle insecurity.
It reiterated support for the establishment of state police and urged relevant authorities to expedite the constitutional and legislative processes required to make it operational.
Educational and Infrastructural Resolutions
On education, the congress criticised the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) late into the night, describing the development as unsafe and detrimental to students’ welfare.
It called on the WAEC to review its scheduling system and ensure that examinations do not extend beyond reasonable hours.
Congress also raised concerns over the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media, urging strict enforcement of existing cyber laws and calling on journalists to uphold professional ethics by verifying information before publication.
It further appealed to the Oyo State Government to address the deteriorating condition of the Agodi Gate Motor Terminal and advised journalists to remain objective, non-partisan and security conscious in the discharge of their duties across the state.
