Oyo South Senatorial candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and member representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency of Oyo State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, has called on Nigerians to sustain the ideals and momentum of democratic governance as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Olajide made the call in a Democracy Day message made available to journalists on Friday through his Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, Tolu Mustapha. The timely address highlights the country’s ongoing political journey as stakeholders look toward the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The federal lawmaker described June 12 as a watershed in Nigeria’s democratic history, noting that the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, statesmen, and ordinary Nigerians in the struggle for democratic rule must continue to inspire the nation’s pursuit of good governance, accountability, and sustainable development.

Reviewing the Democratic Journey on Democracy Day

According to him, the celebration offers an opportunity for a review of the nation’s democratic journey, while also serving as a reminder of the responsibilities of leaders and citizens in safeguarding democratic institutions and promoting national unity.

He urged citizens to look at past struggles to guide future political choices, especially as the momentum builds for the 2027 general elections.

Odidiomo commended the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for what he described as sustained efforts towards infrastructural development, economic growth, and the overall transformation of the state.

The Impact of the Seyi Makinde Administration

Hon. Olajide, according to the statement, said the developmental initiatives being implemented across various sectors in Oyo State have contributed significantly to improving the quality of life of residents and public confidence in governance.

He noted that the progress recorded in the state demonstrates the positive impact of the developmental policies and programmes of the Seyi Makinde administration, adding that the gains of democracy must be protected and expanded for the benefit of future generations.

Legislative Commitments and the 2027 General Elections

Reflecting on the deeper meaning of Democracy Day, the lawmaker stressed that sustainable representation remains the bedrock of true public service. He restated his intent to keep driving institutional support to the grassroots level to ensure democratic dividends are felt by all.

The Oyo South Senatorial candidate further reiterated his commitment to effective representation, grassroots development, and the advancement of policies capable of promoting youth empowerment, digital innovation, educational development, and economic inclusion as the nation approach the 2027 general elections.
