South African police arrested more than 900 people during nationwide South Africa anti-migrant protests on Tuesday that were mostly peaceful but at times turned violent, leaving foreign national shops looted and communities on edge.

What began as coordinated demonstrations across multiple provinces quickly spiralled into localized chaos. Law enforcement officials confirmed on Wednesday that the massive wave of detentions followed intense clashes in several urban hotspots, forcing the government to deploy emergency military reinforcements to restore order.

Scale of the South Africa Anti-Migrant Protests

The sheer scale of the demonstrations tested thin-stretched law enforcement agencies across the country. Of 120 marches, 108 were peaceful while 12 required police intervention, deputy national police commissioner Tebello Mosikili told a press conference, adding reasons for the arrests ranged from immigration violations to public violence, harbouring undocumented migrants and robbery.

The data shows that whilst the vast majority of demonstrators remained orderly, the remaining fraction caused severe disruption. Officials clarified that the sweeps targeting undocumented migrants South Africa is currently hosting were part of a broader push to clamp down on border infractions and civilian lawlessness.

Johannesburg Public Violence Leaves One Dead

The most severe escalations occurred within Gauteng province, where standard demonstrations dissolved into midnight running battles. Police said in a separate statement that one person was shot dead late on Tuesday in Johannesburg’s Alexandra township, where residents were looting informal cornershops known as spaza shops owned by foreign nationals.

The fatal shooting in Alexandra highlights the volatile nature of the Johannesburg public violence that erupted under the cover of darkness. Terrified shopkeepers watched from afar as criminal elements used the political gatherings as an excuse to ransack private property and destroy livelihoods.

Military Deployment and Fatalities

In response to the rapid deterioration of security, the state took the unusual step of sending active military units onto the streets. Police reinforcements were deployed across five of the country’s nine provinces overnight, while soldiers were sent to Johannesburg’s inner-city Hillbrow neighbourhood, where two people were injured in a shooting.

The panic surrounding the arrivals of these marchers led to desperate measures in other major cities. In the port city of Durban police opened an inquest over the death of a foreign national who allegedly jumped from the eighth floor of a building on the eve of the protests, believing he was being targeted.

Behind the Campaign Against Undocumented Migrants South Africa Holds

Tuesday’s marches were organised to mark a “deadline” an anti-immigrant movement had set for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa. Activists had spent weeks mobilising communities online and on the ground, demanding immediate government action regarding immigration policies.

The protests followed months of unrest that have drawn international criticism as foreigners have been driven from their homes and seen their businesses and property vandalised. Human rights organisations warn that the ongoing friction threatens to damage South Africa’s diplomatic standing across the African continent.
