The Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, stepped down from his role in Benin City on Monday. This was as lawmakers prepared to initiate formal impeachment proceedings against him inside the legislative complex.

The political shift was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who issued a brief statement on social media confirming that detailed circumstances regarding the departure would follow.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS,” she wrote.

Following the resignation, lawmakers immediately installed Yekini Idiaye as the new leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Idiaye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency 1, is currently serving his third term in the state legislature.

The transition adhered strictly to an unwritten regional zoning arrangement designed to balance political power across the state’s geopolitical axes.

Under the established convention, when the executive governor originates from the Edo Central Senatorial District, the legislative leadership must be drawn from the Edo North Senatorial District.

Because Idiaye is the longest-serving legislator from Edo North, he assumed the post directly.

Without this regional power-sharing protocol, the Deputy Speaker would have succeeded to the position automatically under standard parliamentary rules.

Addressing reporters immediately after Monday’s parliamentary session, Idiaye accused his predecessor of financial mismanagement and legislative paralysis.

“The House was inaugurated on the 16th of June, 2023, under the leadership of Agbebaku, and since then we have been passing through a lot of challenges, corruption here and there, adjournment here and there, sometimes for 30 days without a cause,” Idiaye said.

“We are not happy with his leadership style. His leadership is poor, and it has been drawing the work of the government backwards,” he added.

Idiaye maintained that the legislative body had effectively forced Agbebaku out to protect executive operations.

“That is why we removed him. We must encourage our performing governor. He is doing well; anything that will derail or stop our performing governor, we must stop it,” Idiaye said.

“That is why we changed him. I can assure all of you that we will do everything possible to support Governor Monday Okpebholo to move this state forward,” he concluded.

Members of the legislature subsequently travelled to the Government House to brief Governor Monday Okpebholo on the abrupt change in parliamentary leadership.

Telephone calls to Agbebaku returned a busy signal, whilst Ebojele had not issued a complete formal statement by Monday evening.

Wider systemic impact on Edo State governance

The abrupt leadership transition in Benin City underscores the fragile balance between executive stability and legislative oversight in Nigerian state politics.

By citing the need to protect Governor Monday Okpebholo from legislative friction, the assembly’s new leadership has signalled a clear shift toward executive realignment.

This rapid restructuring highlights how regional zoning conventions often override standard line-of-succession protocols to maintain political equilibrium across Nigeria’s diverse senatorial districts.

For the citizens of Edo State, the prolonged adjournments mentioned by the incoming leadership point to months of stalled legislative business, directly impacting state budgeting, infrastructure approvals, and public service delivery.

Historical context and legislative precedent

Legislative friction within the Edo State House of Assembly is not without precedent, as regional assemblies in Nigeria frequently experience sudden leadership resets when executive harmony is threatened.

The 2023 inauguration of the assembly was intended to herald a period of stability, yet chronic delays and internal disputes routinely undermined legislative productivity.

With Idiaye now presiding, the assembly faces immediate pressure to clear backlogged bills and demonstrate that the political realignment will yield tangible governance results rather than merely serving elite political interests.
