August 27 is iconic in sports history. It stands as one of the most statistically rich dates in international athletics, defining decades of sprinting supremacy, baseball records, tennis milestones, and major league expansions. From track-and-field dominance in Beijing to base-stealing feats in Major League Baseball, today in sports history August 27 offers a look back at the performances that reshaped global sports.

Usain Bolt Crowns Sprinting Legacy in Beijing

On Aug. 27, 2015, Jamaican legend Usain Bolt secured his fourth consecutive 200-meter World Championship gold medal at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing. Bolt clocked a world-leading 19.55 seconds to decisive defeat American rival Justin Gatlin (19.74), cementing his absolute reign over the sprint distance.

Four years prior on Aug. 27, 2011, the opening day of the 100-meter competition at the Daegu World Championships featured Bolt cruising through his opening heat in 10.10 seconds before a shocking false start in the final altered track history.

Rickey Henderson and Joe Morgan Rewrite Baseball Record Books

On Aug. 27, 1982, Oakland Athletics outfielder Rickey Henderson cemented his status as the premier base-stealer in modern baseball. Henderson swiped his 119th base of the campaign, shattering Lou Brock’s 1974 single-season Major League Baseball record of 118 stolen bases. Henderson finished the historic 1982 season with 130 stolen bases—a single-season mark that remains untouched.

Four years earlier on Aug. 27, 1978, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Joe Morgan established an unprecedented power-speed baseline. Morgan became the first player in Major League Baseball history to achieve 200 career home runs and 500 career stolen bases, solidifying his Hall of Fame credentials. Earlier in the century on Aug. 27, 1911, Chicago White Sox hall-of-famer Ed Walsh delivered a dominant pitching performance, throwing a 5–0 no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox at Comiskey Park.

U.S. Open Tennis Delivers Night Matches and Youth Records

The hard courts and grass lawns of tennis history hold significant milestones on this date as well. On Aug. 27, 1975, Onny Parun defeated Stan Smith at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York, in the very first night match played in U.S. Open history.

On Aug. 27, 1985, 14-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez became the youngest player to win a main-draw match at the U.S. Open by defeating Sara Gomer. Eleven years later, on Aug. 27, 1996, Swedish icon Stefan Edberg swept reigning Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek in straight sets, opening his record 54th consecutive and final Grand Slam appearance. The date also marked key institutional decisions: transsexual player Renee Richards was barred from the 1976 U.S. Open on Aug. 27 after declining a newly instituted chromosome test.

NHL Expands League Footprint in 1973

Off the field, Aug. 27, 1973, proved pivotal for hockey governance. The NHL Board of Governors voted officially to expand the league for the 1974–75 season, granting franchises to the Washington Capitals and the Kansas City Scouts—the entity that later relocated to become the New Jersey Devils.

From Bolt’s sprinting mastery to Henderson’s 1982 campaign, Aug. 27 remains a powerhouse calendar date for sports archivists and stat lovers worldwide. Fans can review full historical championship archives on the World Athletics Official Website.
