As the 2027 political contest for Oyo South Senatorial District gathers momentum, the battle is increasingly shifting from political calculations to a more consequential question: who has the experience and legislative capacity to effectively represent the district at the National Assembly?

Among the candidates in the race for the Oyo South seat in the Senate, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide Odidiomo is presenting himself as a candidate whose case should be judged not merely by promises, but by his record in public office.

The two term member representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency of Oyo state is the senatorial candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement, APM, for Oyo South. His emergence followed the party’s primary and affirmation process involving the nine local government areas that make up the senatorial district.

But what makes Olajide Odidiomo’s candidacy particularly interesting is the argument that he is not approaching the Senate as a political novice.

He is coming with legislative experience.

In an institution where understanding legislative procedure, committee work, policy formulation and government processes is critical, experience can be a major advantage.

Olajide Odidiomo has served two terms in the House of Representatives and currently chairs the House Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity.

That experience gives him familiarity with the workings of the National Assembly and the processes through which legislation, oversight and constituency projects are pursued.

For Oyo South voters, the question is therefore not simply whether a candidate can speak eloquently about development, but whether that candidate understands how to convert legislative influence into tangible benefits for the people.

This is where Olajide’s supporters believe his experience gives him an edge.

One of the strongest arguments being advanced for Olajide’s candidacy is his constituency record.

His supporters also point to constituency interventions credited to him, particularly in education and digital development.

Another factor that distinguishes the current campaign is Olajide’s attempt to engage directly with communities. He has also embarked on grassroots consultations involving party leaders, ward executives, youth leaders, women groups and other stakeholders. This approach is significant because political representation is ultimately about people.

A senator does not represent statistics. A senator represents communities, families, workers, students, traders, farmers, professionals, young people and the elderly. The closer a representative remains to these groups, the easier it becomes to understand their concerns and take those concerns to the legislative chamber.

Olajide Odidiomo’s proposed agenda for Oyo South also extends beyond individual constituency projects. His public statements have emphasised digital inclusion, education, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, youth empowerment, economic opportunity and improved access to government programmes. He has identified additional ICT hubs, healthcare interventions and road projects as areas requiring further attention.

The 2027 election will inevitably produce competing narratives. Other candidates will have their own experience, political structures, supporters and programmes. Voters will have the responsibility of examining each candidate’s record and determining who deserves their mandate.

But elections should not be reduced to who has the loudest campaign or the biggest political gathering. They should be about capacity, character, competence, accessibility and measurable results.

On those criteria, Odidiomo has a record that gives his candidacy a serious foundation. He has served two terms in the House of Representatives. He currently occupies a strategic committee leadership position focused on digital technology and cybersecurity. He has facilitated educational and digital learning projects, engaged with constituents and stakeholders, and continued to articulate an agenda centred on youth development, infrastructure and economic opportunity.

The case for Olajide, therefore, is not simply that he wants to become a senator. It is that he has already been in the arena of public service and is asking voters to judge what he has done before deciding what he may do next.

For Oyo South, the 2027 election presents an opportunity for voters to weigh competing promises against parliamentary experience, accessibility and demonstrable records of public service.

And for supporters of Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, the argument is increasingly clear: If effective representation requires legislative exposure, accessibility, legislative knowledge, youth development and a demonstrable commitment to constituency needs, then Odidiomo has a compelling case for the Oyo South Senate seat.

The final verdict, however, belongs to the voters.
