Fenerbahce Coach, Ismail Kartal has resigned from his position following the club’s 1-1 draw against AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League.

Kartal made the surprise announcement during his post-match press conference, just minutes after Fenerbahce opened their Champions League campaign with a draw in Istanbul.

The result itself represented a positive moment for the Turkish giants, who had waited 18 years to return to Europe’s elite club competition. However, the celebrations were quickly overshadowed by Kartal’s unexpected decision to leave his position.

The 65-year-old confirmed that he had stepped down and explained that his decision was intended to give Fenerbahce the clearest possible path forward.

“I stepped down from my duties this evening. I have made this decision to clear the way for my club. I resigned while the path is still clear, with no intention of ever returning” — Ismail Kartal announced after 1-1 draw for Fenerbahçe against AS Roma.

Fenerbahce 1-1 Roma

Fenerbahce’s Champions League return produced an entertaining contest against Roma, with both sides having opportunities to claim victory.

Roma took the lead in the first half through Bryan Cristante, putting the visitors in front during a period when they managed to create problems for the Turkish side.

Fenerbahce responded after the break and eventually found their equaliser through Archie Brown. The goal brought the home supporters back into the game and gave Fenerbahce a chance to complete their long-awaited Champions League return with a victory.

The hosts pushed for a second goal as the match entered its final stages.

Fenerbahce came particularly close when Nathan Aké struck the crossbar, denying the Turkish club what could have been a dramatic late winner.

The match ultimately finished 1-1, leaving both teams with a point from their opening Champions League fixture.

For Fenerbahce, the result was an encouraging start against a strong Roma side. But within minutes of the final whistle, attention shifted away from the result and towards the future of the club’s manager.

Fenerbahce Coach Resigns

Kartal’s resignation is particularly surprising because he had only returned to the Fenerbahce dugout in June 2026.

This was his fourth spell in charge of the club, and he had been tasked with guiding Fenerbahce through an important period as they attempted to establish themselves back among Europe’s top teams.

Kartal successfully oversaw the club’s Champions League qualifying campaign, helping Fenerbahce navigate the preliminary rounds and secure a place in the league phase.

His return had therefore appeared to be connected to one of the club’s biggest objectives: getting back into the Champions League.

However, his position had also faced pressure following an inconsistent beginning to the domestic season.

Fenerbahce had struggled to find consistent results in the Turkish Super Lig, with the defeat to Besiktas adding to questions surrounding Kartal’s position.

Reports before the Roma match had already suggested that the manager was under scrutiny. Even so, few expected him to announce his resignation immediately after Fenerbahce’s return to the Champions League.

Rather than waiting for the situation to develop further, Kartal decided to step aside himself.

His comments suggest that the decision was made with the club’s interests in mind, although the exact circumstances behind his resignation could become clearer in the coming days.

A Major Change at a Crucial Time

The timing of Kartal’s departure creates a major challenge for Fenerbahce.

The club has only just returned to the Champions League after an 18-year absence, meaning there is significant attention on the team both domestically and across Europe.

Fenerbahce will now have to balance their Champions League commitments with their Turkish Super Lig campaign while also searching for a new permanent manager.

That process could prove difficult because the club cannot afford to lose momentum during such an important period.

The draw against Roma showed that Fenerbahce can compete at Champions League level, with the team recovering from a goal down and creating opportunities to win the match.

The performance also provided some positive signs for the squad, despite the managerial uncertainty that followed.

The biggest question now is whether Fenerbahce can maintain that level of performance during the transition.

What Happens Next for Fenerbahce?

Fenerbahce must now begin the process of identifying a new head coach.

The club’s next appointment will carry significant responsibility. Whoever takes over will inherit a squad competing on two major fronts and will be expected to keep Fenerbahce competitive in the Turkish Super Lig while navigating the Champions League campaign.

The new manager will also have to deal with the expectations surrounding the club’s return to Europe’s top competition.

Kartal’s departure means Fenerbahce are suddenly entering a new chapter only months after bringing him back.

For the players, the immediate challenge will be maintaining focus despite the managerial change. The Champions League campaign has only just begun, meaning there is still plenty of football ahead.

The 1-1 draw against Roma gives Fenerbahce a point from their opening European fixture, but the bigger story is now happening away from the pitch.

Kartal’s decision has transformed what was expected to be a celebration of Fenerbahce’s Champions League return into a period of uncertainty.

The Turkish giants will now look for stability, beginning with the appointment of a new manager capable of handling the demands of domestic and European football.

For Kartal, meanwhile, his fourth spell at Fenerbahce has ended sooner than many expected.

His resignation will remain one of the biggest talking points from the opening round of the club’s Champions League campaign.

Fenerbahce now face an important period as they attempt to move forward without the coach who guided them through qualifying and back into Europe’s premier club competition.
