Fenerbahçe president Aziz Yıldırım has rejected head coach İsmail Kartal’s resignation, insisting that the Turkish manager will remain in charge despite announcing his departure after the club’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma.

Kartal stunned reporters on Thursday, September 10, when he announced his resignation shortly after Fenerbahçe’s return to the Champions League ended in a draw at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

The 65-year-old coach said he had decided to step down to clear the way for the club and indicated that he did not intend to return.

However, his resignation was rejected almost immediately.

Yıldırım addressed reporters minutes after Kartal’s announcement and made it clear that the coach remained Fenerbahçe manager. The president said Kartal had been affected by pressure surrounding the team and an incident during the Roma match.

Kartal Announces Shock Resignation

Fenerbahçe’s Champions League return was supposed to be a celebration after the Turkish club reached the league phase of Europe’s elite competition for the first time in 18 years.

Instead, the night ended in dramatic fashion.

Roma took the lead in Istanbul through Bryan Cristante in the 39th minute, before Archie Brown equalised for the home side shortly after half-time.

Fenerbahçe had opportunities to complete the comeback, but the match finished 1-1.

The result itself was not enough to explain the drama that followed.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Kartal announced that he was stepping down from his position. He said his decision was intended to give the club an opportunity to move forward.

The announcement reportedly caught members of the squad and club officials by surprise.

Even Archie Brown appeared unaware of the decision when he was informed about Kartal’s resignation during his own post-match interview.

President Aziz Yıldırım Refuses to Accept Resignation

Yıldırım quickly moved to end the uncertainty surrounding the manager.

The Fenerbahçe president told reporters that Kartal would continue in his position and insisted that the coach remained part of the club.

Yıldırım explained that Kartal had been under significant pressure and had been upset after a bottle was thrown from the stands during the Roma match.

The club later said the spectator responsible had been identified and banned from the stadium.

Yıldırım also described Fenerbahçe as a family and said he had personally told Kartal to continue in the role.

That statement effectively overturned the manager’s resignation, at least from the club’s perspective.

The situation has created an unusual standoff, with Kartal publicly announcing his intention to leave while the club president insists that he remains the head coach.

Fenerbahçe’s Champions League Return Ends in Draw

The controversy overshadowed what had been an important night for Turkish football.

Fenerbahçe returned to the Champions League league phase after an 18-year absence, giving the club an opportunity to compete against some of Europe’s biggest teams once again.

Roma provided a difficult opening test.

The Italian side took advantage of an opportunity in the first half before Brown brought Fenerbahçe level shortly after the interval.

The hosts pushed for a winner but could not find the decisive goal.

The 1-1 result gave both teams a point, but the attention after the final whistle quickly shifted toward Kartal’s future.

For a club that has finished second in the Turkish top flight in each of the last five seasons, pressure around results and expectations remains extremely high.

Kartal’s Fourth Spell at Fenerbahçe

Kartal has a long history with Fenerbahçe.

He spent a decade at the club as a player before beginning several coaching spells with the Istanbul giants.

His latest return came in June, marking his fourth managerial spell at the club.

Kartal also worked as an assistant during two of Fenerbahçe’s most recent Turkish league title-winning campaigns.

His experience and connection with the club were major factors behind his return, while his latest spell has coincided with Fenerbahçe’s long-awaited return to the Champions League league phase.

That makes the latest resignation drama even more significant.

What Happens Next?

Despite Yıldırım’s public declaration that Kartal remains in charge, uncertainty still surrounds the situation.

ESPN reported that Kartal did not attend Fenerbahçe’s training session on Friday, September 11, adding another layer to the developing story.

The club therefore faces an immediate challenge in resolving the situation before its next competitive fixture.

Fenerbahçe cannot afford prolonged uncertainty, particularly with domestic competition continuing alongside the Champions League campaign.

The Turkish giants have invested heavily in their squad and will be expected to compete for major honours this season.

Kartal’s position was already under pressure before his resignation announcement, and the events following the Roma match have only intensified the spotlight.

Fenerbahçe Face Unusual Managerial Crisis

What began as a Champions League night quickly became one of the most unusual managerial stories of the season.

Kartal announced that he was leaving.

The president said he was staying.

And the club was left attempting to manage the fallout while preparing for the next stage of a demanding campaign.

For now, Yıldırım’s position is clear: İsmail Kartal remains Fenerbahçe coach.

Whether Kartal ultimately continues without further disruption will be one of the biggest questions surrounding the Turkish club in the days ahead.

For a team that waited 18 years to return to the Champions League league phase, Fenerbahçe’s biggest drama may have arrived away from the pitch.

The Kartal saga is far from over.
