Nigeria’s Falconets produced one of their biggest performances at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, smashing New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F match to book a place in the Round of 16.
The result was exactly what Nigeria needed after a difficult start to the tournament. The Falconets lost 2-0 to Spain in their opening game before playing out a goalless draw with China.
That left Moses Aduku’s side needing a positive result against New Caledonia, and they delivered in emphatic fashion.
Nigeria scored four times before half-time and added six more after the break to secure second place in Group F with four points. China also finished on four points, but Nigeria advanced on goal difference.
Kareem and David Lead Nigeria’s Goal Rush
Ramotalahi Kareem was at the centre of Nigeria’s attacking display, scoring a hat-trick as the Falconets overwhelmed their opponents.
Kareem opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute before Rebecca Adegbemile doubled Nigeria’s advantage just two minutes later.
Seimeyeha Akekoromowei then made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute, while Kareem added her second four minutes later.
Nigeria went into the interval with a commanding 4-0 lead.
The second half became even more one-sided
Winner David, who came on at the start of the second half, scored in the 60th minute before Kareem completed her hat-trick four minutes later.
Tosin Rafiu added another in the 70th minute, while Adegbemile scored her second seven minutes later.
David then struck again before completing her hat-trick in stoppage time.
New Caledonia Score, But Falconets Finish Strong
Despite Nigeria’s dominance, New Caledonia managed to find a consolation goal late in the match.
Joceline Kourevi scored in the 89th minute to make it 9-1.
Rather than allowing the goal to affect their momentum, Nigeria responded almost immediately, with David completing her hat-trick in added time to restore the nine-goal advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a 10-1 victory and sent the Falconets through to the knockout stage.
Nigeria’s Defence Still Needs Attention
The attacking performance deserves plenty of praise, but the consolation goal also gives Nigeria something to work on before the knockout stage.
The Falconets had already kept a clean sheet against China in their second group match, while Spain also shut Nigeria out in their opening 2-0 victory.
New Caledonia, however, managed to find a way through the Nigerian defence.
That goal did not change the result, but the knockout stage will bring stronger opposition and fewer opportunities to recover from defensive mistakes.
Nigeria cannot afford to let the excitement of a 10-1 victory hide the areas that still need improvement.
The coaching staff will know that the next round is a different challenge. Against a more clinical opponent, defensive lapses could carry a much heavier price.
Falconets Finish Second Behind Spain
Spain finished top of Group F with nine points after winning all three of their matches.
Nigeria ended the group stage second with four points, ahead of China on goal difference, while New Caledonia finished bottom without a point.
The Falconets scored 10 goals and conceded three across their three group matches.
That record shows the dramatic turnaround in their campaign. After failing to score in their first two matches, Nigeria exploded offensively when qualification was on the line.
The victory also makes Nigeria the only African team still competing at the tournament.
England Await in the Round of 16
Nigeria’s reward for reaching the knockout stage is a meeting with England.
The Falconets will now need to carry the confidence from their 10-1 victory into a much tougher test.
The group stage showed both sides of the Nigerian team. There was the frustration of losing to Spain, the discipline of holding China to a draw and then the attacking explosion against New Caledonia.
The challenge now is to put all three lessons together.
Nigeria have reached this stage with plenty of attacking confidence, but their defensive organisation will need to improve if they are to go deep into the competition.
For now, though, the Falconets have given Nigerian football supporters plenty to celebrate.
A 10-1 victory has taken Nigeria into the Round of 16, and the country’s hopes of going all the way remain alive in Poland.
