An urgent appeal for the total Rehabilitation of the Approximately 70-kilometre Abeokuta Roundabout –Imeko/Meko Section of Federal Highway F.102, Terminating at the Nigeria-Benin Republic Frontier
Your Excellency, Our Dear President,
I write with profound respect for your office and a sincere sense of responsibility regarding the Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation and the plight of all road users who depend on the Abeokuta to Imeko road. I respectfully appeal for your urgent intervention to ensure the total and durable rehabilitation of the 70-kilometre corridor extending to Nigeria’s border with the Republic of Benin. This appeal is made in the spirit of constructive engagement, national development, and the protection of lives and livelihoods across the Imeko Igbinrèkòtí Kingdom infrastructure network.
A Federal Highway of Strategic National Importance
Your Excellency, the Abeokuta to Imeko road is not merely a local access route. It forms part of the Federal Highway F.102 corridor, which connects communities within Ogun State to Nigeria’s western international frontier. The Federal Highways Order identifies the F.102 route as extending from Shagamu through the Owode to Abeokuta axis to Meko at the Nigeria Benin Republic frontier road network.
The strategic value of this route extends beyond the immediate communities along it. It facilitates the movement of agricultural produce, commercial goods, passengers, public servants, and security personnel. Given Nigeria’s responsibilities for border security and regional commerce, a dependable road connecting Abeokuta to the Meko frontier is essential to the public interest.
The Deplorable Condition of the Route
Your Excellency, the condition of substantial portions of the Abeokuta to Imeko road has become a serious concern to residents, traders, and travellers. Deteriorated road surfaces, potholes, and travel difficulties increase journey times, vehicle operating costs, and the risk of road accidents.
For residents who require access to healthcare, education, and government offices, the road condition presents a heavy burden. Commercial drivers must contend with severe vehicle wear and tear. We appeal for a professional engineering assessment and a properly funded Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation programme covering the entire 70-kilometre stretch.
Acknowledgement of Senator Yayi’s Palliative Intervention
Your Excellency, it is fair to acknowledge the intervention of the Distinguished Senator, Aremo (Dr.) Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, CON, known as Senator Yayi, whose palliative efforts improved a portion of this road.
From our observation, this portion represents the only relatively good stretch encountered from Abeokuta Roundabout towards Imeko. Nevertheless, palliative measures cannot substitute for the total rehabilitation of a deteriorated federal highway. We respectfully appeal to Your Excellency to build upon these gains by directing relevant federal authorities to undertake the full Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation.
Socioeconomic Consequences for Our People
Your Excellency, the road condition impacts every aspect of community life. Farmers need reliable access to markets to transport produce and reduce post-harvest losses. Traders require functional infrastructure along the Nigeria Benin Republic frontier road corridor to conduct legitimate commercial activities.
Furthermore, poor road conditions impede timely access to medical facilities and delay emergency transportation. Improved infrastructure across the Imeko Igbinrèkòtí Kingdom infrastructure grid would strengthen economic activity and support development across the wider frontier region.
Imeko: A Historic Centre of Frontier Administration Since 1899
Your Excellency, Imeko possesses a distinguished place in the historical development of frontier administration. The Lagos Colony Annual Colonial Report of 1899 records the establishment of a Preventive Service on the Western Frontier, with its headquarters at Meko.
This documentary evidence demonstrates that Meko’s administrative importance dates back to the nineteenth century. Imeko’s historical significance is also associated with its role as a garrison town during the Second World War. This legacy deserves recognition through improved infrastructure and a renewed commitment to Nigeria’s western frontier communities.
Imeko: An International Religious Destination
Your Excellency, Imeko holds exceptional religious significance as the global headquarters of the Celestial Church of Christ. The community attracts worshippers and pilgrims from across the world, earning the popular appellation, “The Jerusalem and Mecca of Africa.”
The influx of pilgrims creates substantial demands on transportation, accommodation, and safety. A fully rehabilitated Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation project would improve access for pilgrims, residents, and religious leaders, supporting the safe movement of visitors into the Imeko Igbinrèkòtí Kingdom infrastructure network.
National Security and Border-Management Imperative
Your Excellency, the strategic importance of Imeko is reinforced by its position along the Nigeria Benin Republic frontier road boundary. Effective border management depends on accessible roads through which officials and emergency responders can move efficiently.
A rehabilitated highway would support the mobility of security personnel and facilitate legitimate cross-border commerce. Improving the Abeokuta to Imeko road should therefore be considered within the broader objectives of national integration and border security.
Our Humble Appeal to Your Excellency
We respectfully appeal to Your Excellency to direct the Federal Ministry of Works to take the following actions:
* Conduct a comprehensive engineering assessment of the 70-kilometre Abeokuta Roundabout to Meko section of the highway.
* Approve and implement the total Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation project rather than relying solely on temporary palliative measures.
- Provide adequate funding and an implementation framework for timely execution.
- Ensure durable engineering standards, including appropriate drainage and pavement design.
- Provide effective project supervision to ensure lasting infrastructure standards.
- Establish an appropriate maintenance plan to protect the investment.
- Keep affected communities reasonably informed about project progress.
A Call for Renewed Hope Through Infrastructure
Your Excellency, the Renewed Hope Agenda places emphasis on national development and improved living conditions. The Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation would translate these broad objectives into practical benefits for people living and working along Nigeria’s western frontier.
For Imeko, the proposed project would address immediate infrastructure needs while recognising the community’s historical and religious importance. A properly rehabilitated highway will support livelihoods and strengthen legitimate commerce.
Our Final and Earnest Appeal
Your Excellency, as the traditional ruler of Imeko Igbinrèkòtí Kingdom, I consider it my responsibility to draw federal attention to matters affecting our people’s welfare. This appeal is made respectfully and in good faith to seek a lasting solution to the condition of this vital route.
We earnestly appeal to Your Excellency to facilitate the total Federal Highway F.102 rehabilitation of the Abeokuta to Imeko corridor. Such an intervention will provide practical relief, strengthen border connectivity, and demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to national development.
May this appeal receive favourable consideration in the overriding interest of Imeko, Ogun State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest respect and esteemed regards.
Yours faithfully,
HRM Ọba Benjamin Gbadegẹṣin Alabi Oyeditan-Olanite
